Stunning desert landscapes with traditional music and improvisations.
The French bestseller L'Atlantide (1919) by Pierre Benoit inspired director Jacques Feyder to undertake a daring undertaking: an eight-month location shoot in the Sahara. The stunning desert landscapes and opulent sets in which this mysterious adventure drama takes place enchanted a large audience. The film became one of the most expensive, but also most successful French productions of its time.
Composer Maripepa Contreras made a score for this film for the Marmoucha quintet. She is now making an arrangement for a more extensive line-up especially for the Muziekgebouw. The dynamic soundtrack, which interweaves traditional music from the region with her own compositions and live improvisation, follows the emotional twists and turns of the story. In it, two French legionnaires get caught in the web of Antinéa, ruler of the lost empire of Atlantis.
