In this masterful Molière adaptation, Emil Jannings shines as a sleazy parasite who sneaks into a wealthy family with religious zeal. Behind the pious façade hides pure greed. In Murnau's work, cinema itself becomes a weapon against hypocrisy and brings light into the darkness: in the present of the 1920s, similar dark machinations are at work as in Molière's work, whose material is presented as a film within a film and plays with the contrast and constants between times.
