Mark Herman's bittersweet comedy drama, starring Stephen Tompkinson, Ewan McGregor, Tara Fitzgerald and Pete Postlethwaite, was the surprise box-office hit of 1996 and regularly features in lists of the best British films ever made, including the BFl's definitive top 100. It tells the story of Danny, the devoted leader of the Grimley Colliery Band, who is determined to show the Tories 'we are not defeated'.
