Mahler / Kilar
Orkiestra Symfoniczna Filharmonii Pomorskiej & Toruńska Orkiestra Symfoniczna conducted by Dainius Pavilionis (Litwa) - Sala Koncertowa CKK Jordanki

Program Info:
For the finals of the 30. International Festival Nova Music and Architecture, we have prepared something special. For the first time in history, the Toruń Symphony Orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor – a majestic work that requires an extensive orchestra. In order to achieve enormous dynamics, powerful contrasts and extreme emotions – from mourning and rage to triumph – the composer needed a massive section of strings and wind instruments. Over a hundred musicians will perform on the stage of CKK Jordanki – in addition to the artistic ensemble of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra, the Pomeranian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Dainius Pavilionis will present themselves on stage.

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor is considered to be the beginning of a "middle", nostalgic period in the composer's oeuvre. The piece consists of five movements, the fourth of which, Adagietto, was used in Luchino Visconti's film Death in Venice. This is not the end of the work's cinematographic conquests, as the Fifth Symphony became the inspiration and leitmotif for the film Tár with Cate Blanchett in the title role.

The program also includes Suite Wojciech Kilar's from the film Dracula . The composer recalled the beginnings of his collaboration with Coppola: "Francis Ford Coppola, thanks to The Godfather and the first part of Apocalypse Now, has always been my favorite director. One day, at 3:00 a.m., he called me with an offer to write music for Dracula . Of course, I agreed, and that's for two reasons. First of all, I have always associated cinema with Coppola, because I like and appreciate cinema, which means this term in the language of film people. Image, movement, action, great passions, etc., etc. If I need metaphysics, I don't go to the cinema, I just need to reach for my bookshelf, Pascal, St. Thomas Aquinas, or simply the Holy Scripture . And secondly, there is no denying that, to quote the Godfather , it was an offer that could not be refused."

The concert will be hosted by a long-time TV presenter, author of hundreds of reports and programs, Urszula Guźlecka.

The program includes:
Wojciech Kilar – Suite from the music to the film Dracula
Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor / (premiere in Toruń)
