Klondike, 1898. The first gold miners were confronted with the snow-capped mountains. In a Chaplinesque vision of Alaska, the Tramp ventures there and finds refuge in a cabin...
Shot in 1925, the film still retains the same strength today: inventiveness, exceptional talent for observing everyday life, originality of an omnipresent dreamlike that transfigures most situations. We can admire at the same time a ferocious and touching portrait of the human being, a raw vision of what capitalism is and a very personal reference to the director's own biography.
Confronted with living conditions marked by hunger, cold, brutality, fear, poverty and daily injustice, the characters reveal their greed. As a result, the Tramp resorts to humour and derision, but uses culture and dignity as a bulwark against bestiality. A comical, immortal and terrible scene shows him making a shoe his meal (the boiled shoe IS a fowl, the laces ARE spaghetti and the nails, the bones!); A meal that is certainly absurd but which respects the codes of decorum and gives the wretched back his humanity. Likewise, he stages the most beautiful – and shortest – ballet imaginable, an unforgettable moment where the ballerina's slippers are hotcakes. Chaplin also evokes his destiny – and in particular his personal success born of a paradox ("I became rich by playing a poor man", he used to say). Fortune is also the result of chance (more than that of merit). The irresistible gag of the hut tilted at 45 degrees, in very unstable balance, reminds us of this.
