28 June 2026 Dessau (Germany)
Goldrausch (The Gold Rush)
Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau conducted by Svetoslav Borisov - Open Air am Mausoleum
Program Info: The great Charlie Chaplin (1889–1977) considered *The Gold Rush* to be his finest film. “I want to be remembered for this film,” he remarked years later. By the end of filming, there were seven kilometres of footage, which Chaplin – writer (without a script!), director, producer and lead actor all rolled into one – then viewed and edited himself. The successful premiere took place on 26 June 1925. In 1942, Chaplin added dialogue and music he had composed himself to the film for a re-release. Although he had never received any formal training in instrumental or compositional theory, he achieved something remarkable: his music not only illustrates the external events of the respective scenes, but also characterises the inner lives of the characters. Furthermore, there are numerous references ranging from Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky to popular songs.
Alaska, 1898. Charlie arrives in the Klondike alongside gold prospectors and adventurers from all over the world. Fleeing a snowstorm, the clumsy fellow takes refuge in a hut, where he meets two other fortune-seekers. To avoid starvation, Charlie softens one of his shoes and eats it with relish, winding the laces around his fork like spaghetti and gnawing on the shoe nails like chicken gizzards. (One of the most famous scenes in film history!) Later, in town, the Tramp falls hopelessly in love. But in the end, he has not only found plenty of gold, but also found happiness in love. Happy ending!
