Men on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag) by Robert Siodmak with Brigitte Borchert, Christl Ehlers, Annie Schreyer 1930 / Alemagne / 1h13 / DCP / vostf Copy: Tamasa Distribution
Five characters play the same roles in this film that they play in real life: taxi driver, shoe saleswoman, record saleswoman, wine salesman, extra. They are simply men and women of the city. Wolfgang meets Christl and invites him to accompany him to a picnic the next day at the Wannsee beach, Berlin's Mecca for leisure...
A youthful work of future Hollywood talents, Men on Sunday is nonetheless a notable film of German realist cinema. This chronicle is a realistic, sensitive and ferocious portrayal of the lives of five young city dwellers. A fiction intertwined with documentary, it is part of the artistic movement of the "Neue Sachlichkeit" which is characterised by the representation of reality stripped of all artifice. [...] The grace and finesse of the scenes taken on the spot underline the reverie, the sensuality, the enchantment offered by suspended time, as well as the social and urban emptiness, poverty, disenchantment and pessimism that admits. The budget was derisory, the film was shot in natural settings, played by non-professional actors according to an improvised script. It was released in 1930, at the height of the boom in talkies, and although it deliberately went against established commercial patterns, its innovative nature ensured it a certain critical success in Germany and abroad.
