This melodrama, shot in the summer of 1917 and released in 1918, is an interesting early work by Abel Gance, who would later become famous with films such as J'accuse , La Roue and Napoléon . Unlike the large frescoes he would later direct, it is an intimate drama, filmed mainly in medium shots or close-ups, emphasising the expression of the actors' faces. Most of the sets depict richly decorated interiors, but when Gance wanted to focus the action on the characters' feelings, the actors were filmed against a black background, or accompanied only by symbolic objects, such as the statue of an oriental deity during the death scenes, to symbolise the characters' powerlessness in the face of their fate. In the purest romantic tradition, the film strives to show that art is the fruit of torment and suffering. The character of the composer, inspired by Beethoven and absorbed by a symphony, is part of the gallery of outstanding characters that populate Gance's work.
