Tribute to Douglas Fairbanks #3

The Matrimaniac
by Paul Powell
with Douglas Fairbanks, Constance Talmadge
1916 / United States / 0h46 / DCP / original version with French subtitles

Jimmie and Marna want to get married, but Marna's father opposes it. So they decide to flee. They get on a train and, at the first stop, Jimmie goes to get a pastor, but the train starts without them...

A lively and playful comedy, The Matrimaniac follows a couple determined to get married at all costs, launched into a frantic race where each step seems to create a new obstacle. Douglas Fairbanks plays a young man overflowing with enthusiasm, ready to deploy limitless inventiveness to get around the setbacks that accumulate on his way. The film gleefully exploits the mechanics of delay, setback, and chase, providing Fairbanks with the perfect terrain to express his physical agility and visual gag sense. Alongside Constance Talmadge, he composes a complicit duo whose energy feeds the sustained rhythm of the story. Filmed in 1916, The Matrimaniac illustrates the way in which American comedy of the time combines movement, spontaneity and situational humour. It is also a valuable testament to the period when Fairbanks, before his heroic roles, shaped his image as a modern, dynamic and irresistibly optimistic actor.
