A conscientious bureaucrat is fired from his company. After long wanderings in search of a job, he meets a friend who advises him to find a "grandmother", i.e. a protector in high places. But the letter of recommendation he has at his disposal invites him not to entrust any work to his bearer, described as a brazen beggar...
Rediscovered in 1967, My Grandmother is somewhere between comedy and drama. Influenced by German expressionism, constructivism, the French avant-garde and surrealism, this caustic satire reflects with a certain irreverence the turpitudes of its time and bureaucracy. A model of eccentricity in avant-garde Soviet cinema, the story is that of a laid-off employee who tries to get his job back thanks to the recommendation of a "grandmother", a high-ranking protector. A sharp criticism of the bureaucratic system, the film is an unleashing of experimental techniques (stop motion, perspective, rapid editing), between slapstick, constructivism and futurism. Banned for nearly 40 years, it has since been recognised as a masterpiece of Georgian silent cinema.
