The King of the Circus (Max, the circus king) by Édouard-Émile Violet and Max Linder with Max Linder, Eugen Burg, Vilma Bánky 1925 / France-Austria / 0h58 / DCP / vf Copy: FPA Classics
Despite the anger of his uncle the Marquis, Count Max de Pompadour remained an inveterate bambocheur. Summoned to settle down and get married, he says he loves the beautiful Ketty who triumphs at the Buffalo circus...
Max Linder has just made a triumphant return to the Aubert Palace screen with The King of the Circus... Rarely has such a humorous film been presented to the public. His screenplay, where the most dizzying "gags" accumulate, changes us from the usual style of comedy films. It's the good old Gallic gaiety that triumphs again at the studio after having been banned for a long time... And how old memories reminded me of Max Linder's new film... Its protagonist, still as young, as amusing as ever, makes the spectators of 1925 laugh as he entertained those of 1910... We recognize Max's "manner," a method that has always triumphed and has been used by the most famous American comedians. Didn't Charlie Chaplin admit that he owed his fame to him and didn't he declare himself, not without pride, a disciple of Max Linder?... After working for a long time in America, Max is regaining his former popularity. His screenplay, which denotes an old hand in the cinema, inevitably makes us laugh from beginning to end, so powerful is the comic screw of the author and the artist...
