The Three Ages (Three Ages) by Buster Keaton and Edward F. Cline with Buster Keaton, Margaret Leahy, Wallace Beery 1923 / United States / 1h03 / DCP / original version with French subtitles
Three plots set in three historical periods — prehistory, ancient Rome, and the Contemporary era — intersect to prove the timelessness of the love relationship between man and woman. In each sequence, the characters compete to get the attention of the same woman...
The more it changes... and more it's the same! This is what Buster Keaton wanted to prove to us in The Three Ages. He did so with a lot of humor by presenting us with the same idyll lived in prehistoric times, under the reign of Caesar, and in the present day. Rich in happy discoveries, The Three Ages testifies to a considerable evolution in the understanding of the comic film. In an article by Buster Keaton, which we published last week, did not the great artist himself expose the progress of this evolution since the time, not so long ago, of the "explosion" and the "cottage cheese"? "It is not an easy task," he said, "to make life funnier than it is!" We understand this very well and appreciate all the more the work and efforts of those to whom we owe the pleasant recreation that is a good comic film. Cinémagazine, 1925 – n° 9, 27 February 1925
