Tribute to Douglas Fairbanks #1

Wild and Woolly
by John Emerson
with Douglas Fairbanks, Eileen Percy
1917 / United States / 1h12 / DCP / original version with French subtitles

A wealthy man from the East, who has always dreamed of living in the Wild West, plans to settle in a small town in the West. Unbeknownst to him, the days when the city was wild are over and it is now an orderly and civilised place. The inhabitants, not wanting to lose a rich potential resident, manage to transform the city and conform it to the young man's fantasies...

The western was one of the most popular genres of the silent era; even those who had never seen a cow could rush to the movies to enjoy the incredible adventures of Tom Mix, William S. Hart, Harry Carey and others. It was inevitable that this discrepancy between the Wild West of cinema and the real Wild West would be exploited for comic purposes. Douglas Fairbanks is the undisputed king of swashbuckling films, but in 1917 he was still working on a mix of modern adventure comedies and wacky westerns. Wild and Woolly was the second of seven films he directed that year, a collaboration with director John Emerson and screenwriter Anita Loos. Fairbanks loved the West and felt like a kid in a candy store when he could play with horses, lassos, and revolvers. Douglas Fairbanks is at the top of his physical form in this film. He jumps over tall buildings in a single bound, rides at full speed and demonstrates incredible skill with the lasso.
