Silver Screen Music Concert as part of the Central Square of Music Festival
Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Jerzy Semkow conducted by Wojciech Rodek - Central Square
Program Info: The programme of this unique concert as part of the Central Square of Music Festival will evoke iconic pieces of film music, showing its important inspiration: romantic programme music. It was in the nineteenth century that the way of thinking about music as a carrier of image, narrative and symbol – capable of telling stories, building dramatic tension and suggestively influencing the listener's imagination – was fully formed. This aesthetic, developed especially in opera overtures and symphonic poems, found a natural extension in film music in the twentieth century. Gioacchino Rossini's Overture to Wilhelm Tell is already a model example of musical narration: from an idyllic image of nature, through a violent storm, to a triumphant finale. A similar power of suggestion can be found in Paul Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice – a brilliant symphonic scherzo in which masterful orchestration and emotional crescendo perfectly convey the grotesque character of Goethe's ballad about an adept of magic who has lost control of an enchanted broom. The famous symphonic works included in the concert program have been used on the big screen many times. This kind of composer's imagination finds its continuation in film music. A special place in this context is occupied by the work of John Williams, one of the most outstanding and influential film music composers in history. Author of music for over a hundred films, five-time Oscar winner and record holder in terms of the number of nominations (over 50!), Williams is adored for his extraordinary ability to create memorable themes, as well as for his masterful, colorful orchestration. His music for the Harry Potter film series builds a world of magic and fantasy with clear motifs and colourful instrumental textures, while the symphony with Star Wars with heroic fanfare, lyrical themes and expressive drama, it became an icon of music co-creating film emotions, imitated many times later.
A special place in the concert is occupied by music written for the films of the great Polish director Andrzej Wajda. Andrzej Korzyński, with his versatile talent, perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of an extraordinary story about love and death in Brzezin . Wojciech Kilar's film images created for such masterpieces as The Promised Land or Pan Tadeusz became widely recognizable, becoming autonomous musical works. The year 2026 was established as the Year of Andrzej Wajda by the Senate of the Republic of Poland to celebrate the centenary of the birth (6 March 1926) and the tenth anniversary of the death (9 October 2016) of one of the most outstanding Polish directors.
The work of outstanding film music composers proves that music written for cinema can reach the highest artistic level and function successfully on concert stages. From the romantic visions of Rossini and Dukas to the symphonic frescoes of Kilar and Williams, there is an uninterrupted line of thinking about music as an art of storytelling – suggestive, emotional and communicative, which is why it is so widely admired and loved by listeners.
