The Artist has won five Oscars, including Best Music. If there was a category for four-legged friends at the Academy Awards, the Jack Russel Terrier Uggie would certainly have won a trophy. Because it is thanks to his rough-haired charm that the smile of his film master does not appear narcissistic, but rather irresistible. George Valentin is the name of the man and he is a film star at the end of an era. Talkies conquered Hollywood and with it a young generation, including a certain Peggy Miller. Sure, it crackles between Peggy and George immediately! Because a black and white silent film in 2011 needs a straightforward story.
The music is all the more important: It replaces dialogue, colour and the depiction of all the not quite house broken feelings that were taboo in Hollywood from the mid-1930s. This music by Ludovic Bource is masterfully successful; detailed and speaking, never unnecessarily clichéd. An equally affectionate homage to the past as the film as a whole is. There are some unobtrusive references to the history of the film, as well as wonderful interiors and cars, by the way. And yet there is a charm in the big "as if", which makes the film really airy and funny, so playful and charming.
