Greatness, intensity, frantic and magnetic lyricism : a visual fairyland enlivens this program, like an epic fresco whose hero is none other than the orchestra itself.

Who could remain indifferent to the epic ringtones of Star Wars ? The magnetism of John Williams' art is not without roots in Korngold, who had worked for Hollywood during the war, and who wished, with his Violin Concerto , to make a comeback in concert halls. Dedicated to Alma Mahler, the score is of a virtuosity that never stifles vocal lyricism, and does not fail to quote the composer's most beautiful film scores! In Rachmaninoff's work, Symphony No. 3 , which was misunderstood at its premiere, responded to the desire for a more " economical " style. From the beginning of the first movement, an austere melody, close to a religious chant, strikes the listener : it serves as a matrix motif throughout the symphony ; it is recognisable in the subtle alchemy of timbres of the second movement, and it resounds again in the brass, preceding the Dies irae so haunting in Rachmaninoff, in the last movement with its more danceable and popular inflections.

Program:
John Williams - Throne Room and End Title (from the Star Wars)
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Violin Concerto, the concerto has themes from the scores for the movies ANOTHER DAWN (1937), ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) & THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937)

Intermission

Serge Rachmaninoff - Symphony No. 3
