Orchestra and soloists transport us, eyes wide open, into the magic of the dark rooms, with this tribute full of contrasts to the greatest Hollywood films. We can only fill up on emotions, and endearing memories !
When Visconti was asked who was the greatest composer of film music, he replied : " Richard Wagner, of course ! ". This shows the organic links that link opera, the great symphonic tradition and cinema. Hollywood, which makes it both a " dream machine " and an industry, thus becomes the crucible of exceptional musical production. European émigrés such as Korngold (the soundtrack of Michael Curtiz's The Private Life of Elizabeth of England ), or Bernard Herrmann (the Wagnerian score for Vertigo ) brought with them the great symphonic tradition, which was gradually adorned with American idiosyncrasies. The result is the passage to the cinema of the greatest Broadway musicals, with their rhythmic energy, their galvanizing or overwhelming show tunes, their prodigious ability to enclose the moment in a simple melodic formula, a simple interval in the form of a call, for universal effectiveness. In cinema, music is not a dressing : it is the secret of emotion and the accuracy of meaning. Where would the melancholy of Casablanca be without As Time Goes By ?
