Program Info: The Dawn Film by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, United States, 1927, 94 minutes
For the centenary of L'Aurore , a pivotal masterpiece of cinema regularly cited as one of the most beautiful films ever made, Alexandre Tharaud revives a passion that rocked his youth: the accompaniment of silent films.
Directed by Murnau and released in 1927, Sunrise Sunriseis a seminal film, praised as one of the peaks in the history of cinema. François Truffaut described it as "the most beautiful film in the world". A true technical and narrative feat, it invents camera movements of unprecedented fluidity and is also one of the first feature films to benefit from a synchronized soundtrack, integrating sound effects and music. A universal fable about love – as its subtitle A Song of Two Humans underlines – L'Aurore has never ceased to inspire filmmakers and musicians. For this evening, Alexandre Tharaud, who readily cites the film as one of his favourite "classics", provides the musical accompaniment.
