Metropolis
Thierry Escaich , organ & Joël Grare, percussion - Philharmonie de Paris, Grande salle Pierre Boulez

Program Info:
Metropolis
Germany film by Fritz Lang, 1927
A film from the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden

The organist Thierry Escaich is regularly invited to the Philharmonie to improvise original music on the masterpieces of silent cinema. For Metropolis , with whom he is familiar, he shares the stage with percussionist Joël Grare.

Even without Gottfried Huppertz's epic score, which was only found in 2008, the film contains its own musical proposition: sprinkled with science fiction, horror, love romance, catastrophe, fantasy, class struggle and biblical Manichaeism, the narrative framework is articulated in a Prelude, an Interlude and a Furioso. At the centre, the alienation of man by the machine – a recurring theme in the silent cinema of the 1920s – and, behind it, by man, whom the sin of pride brings back to Faust, Frankenstein and the Spalanzani of The Tales of Hoffmann . Thierry Escaich and Joël Grare offer their own musical vision of Fritz Lang's imaginary city, with the lines and colours of its futuristic architecture.
