The Adventures of Prince Ahmed
Yellow Socks Orchestra conducted by Joanna Natalia Ślusarczyk - Philharmonie de Paris, Salle des concerts - Cité de la musique
Program Info: Lotte Reiniger silent animated film, Germany, 1926, 65 minutes Music by Wolfgang Zeller
Entirely devoted to the symphonic pages that illuminate the films of yesterday and today, the Yellow Socks Orchestra offers a unique sound experience. It revives one of the first masterpieces of animated cinema, inspired by the Arabian Nights .
In an Eastern kingdom, Ahmed, son of the caliph, is convinced to try a winged horse offered by an evil mage. He sets off on a great adventure to the island of Wak-Wak, falls in love with Princess Pari-Banu and confronts his rival, who has captured his sister, with the help of a witch and her friend Aladdin.
If the screenplay travels between several existing tales, the magic of Lotte Reiniger's articulated silhouettes, inspired by shadow theatre from Asia and the films of Georges Méliès, is totally new in the 1920s. Visible today thanks to a copy found in 1954 and restored in 1999, the film comes back to life here with the soundtrack of Wolfgang Zeller, author of many silent film scores and incidental music.
