Program Info: With The Phantom of the Opera (1925), a milestone in film history returns to the big screen. Alexandre Tharaud improvises the piano accompaniment live to Rupert Julian's film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel. Actor Lon Chaney portrayed the Phantom in an iconic way and made the film a sensation with his groundbreaking make-up.
For Tharaud, film is not an afterthought. In his younger years, he earned his spurs as a cinema pianist, improvising for silent films. He took that experience with him to previous film projects at the Muziekgebouw, such as Orlac's Hände and Sunrise . His album Cinema (2022) also betrays an enduring fascination with the silver screen.
