Chamber music: Glass and Dohnányi
Musicians of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra - Amuz
Program Info: Operas, symphonies, concertos, film and chamber music... With his characteristic repetitive style, Philip Glass, who celebrates his ninetieth birthday in 2027, has been setting the tone of minimalist classical music since the 80s of the last century. He wrote his String Quartet No. 3 for the film Mishima , a biographical drama from 1985 about the Japanese writer and activist Yukio Mishima. Members of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra play excerpts from the penetrating film score. They also bring music by Ernst von Dohnányi, one of the most versatile figures in Hungarian musical life. Musically, he remained firmly anchored in the late Romantic tradition, encouraged by none other than Johannes Brahms.
Program Philip Glass - String Quartet No. 3, 'Mishima', based the soundtrack to the 1985 film by director Paul Schrader Ernő Dohnányi Pianokwintet nr. 2 in E flat, opus 26
