Albrecht conducts Korngold and Shostakovich
Antwerp Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marc Albrecht - Koningin Elisabethzaal

Program Info:
Self-chosen or obliged by circumstances: an exile marks a new beginning in any case. Composer Erich Korngold moved from Austria to California in search of fame, which he acquired with his film music. Yet he also left behind one symphony – perhaps his most personal work, marked by his artistic and personal tensions. The Dutch-Kurdish composer Hawar Tawfiq also knows what it is like to leave your country and start over. rIJks describes his first walk from the IJ to the Rijksmuseum in the metropolis of Amsterdam. It was a musical voyage of discovery full of wonder. Finally, Dmitri Shostakovich was not looking for a new country, but a way to survive in Stalin's Soviet Union. Between folds and resistance: his entire oeuvre speaks of his difficult handling of the politics of his time. He wrote the First Cello Concerto in calmer waters, after Stalin's death. Although his struggle between creativity and Soviet rule was not over, it did not prevent him from making a masterpiece. In the hands of top cellist Daniël Müller-Schott, this is a work that gets under the skin.

Program
Hawar Tawfiq - rIJks
Dimitri Shostakovich - Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, opus 107
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Symphony in F-sharp, Op. 40, ses themes from ELIZABETH & ESSEX and CAPTAIN BLOOD in its slow movement and a theme from KINGS ROW in the finale.
