Philip Glass Explored with Russell Davies & Namekawa
National Symphony Orchestra Ireland conducted by Dennis Russell Davies - National Concert Hall
Program Info: National Symphony Orchestra Ireland Dennis Russell Davies conductor Maki Namekawa piano
Two of Philip Glass’s most distinguished champions – conductor Dennis Russell Davies and pianist Maki Namekawa – return to conclude National Symphony Orchestra Ireland’s focus on one of the most unique and distinctive voices in American contemporary music with three Irish premieres.
Glass has praised Dennis Russell Davies as ‘one of the world’s most inventive conductors’. He reunites with Glass specialist and muse, Maki Namekawa, to reprise their acclaimed 2023 world premiere of the Mishima Piano Concerto for its Irish debut. Crafted from the haunting soundtrack to the 1985 film, it retains its hypnotic, cinematic qualities while giving the piano a central, virtuosic role.
The Light, Glass’s first score for a full symphony orchestra, and the Interlude from his opera, The Voyage, also receive Irish premieres.
