Dobbelt britisk - Britten og Händel
NRK Kringkastings-Orkestret conducted by Christian Blex - NRK Store studio
Program Info: Norwegian Radio Orchestra Christian Blex, conductor Janina Kronberger, violin Magnus Boye Hansen, viola
After passing the conductor's exam with Kork in 2025, the young conducting talent Christian Blex has been invited back to Kork. Despite his German background, the programme is entirely English (even though Händel was born in Germany, back then).
We get a sparkling start with Georg Friedrich Händel’s fireworks music, composed in 1748 to celebrate the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle after the Austrian Succession War. The fireworks were not particularly spectacular, but Händel’s music, with all its lively dances, has become one of the most performed Baroque works of all time. Two hundred years later, another composer gains attention in England. In 1932, the remarkably mature Benjamin Britten was just 18 and a student at the Royal College of Music. He had just begun work on a double concerto for violin, viola, and strings. He was not entirely satisfied with the progress, and the piece was not completed until more than 20 years after Britten’s death. Since 1997, the concerto has been performed at irregular intervals, and now two musicians from Kork are soloists in this revealing work of youth.
The second piece by Britten is perhaps better known, as Britten composed it for an educational film about the instruments of the orchestra in 1946 (the same year Kork was founded). The music is written over a highly catchy theme by the Baroque composer Purcell, and throughout, listeners learn about the different instruments and instrument groups. The verbal part of Young Person’s Guide will be delivered by the Kork musicians themselves.
