Respighi
Düsseldorfer Symphoniker conducted by Alpesh Chauhan - Tonhalle
The 1910s, 1920s, 1930s—three decades in which music underwent a dizzying development. This evening, we'll span the spectrum from Ottorino Respighi's impressionistic "Italo-pop" to Leoš Janácek's unmistakable fairy-tale idiom to the late-Romantic escapism of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. In his symphonic poems "Pini di Roma" and "Fontane di Roma," Respighi takes you on a dreamlike tour of Rome, where you'll even catch Neptune gliding through rush-hour traffic, pulled by seahorses. Janácek's "Sinfonietta" unleashes a gigantic brass phalanx of 25 instruments that literally shakes the soundstage. And Korngold's late-Romantic Violin Concerto, with its rich Hollywood sound, will transport you to an emotional dream world – played with virtuosity and yearning by Ilya Gringolts. Three composers, one great commonality: an unbridled joy in opulent orchestral sound. A brilliant finale to the season!
