Sakamoto’s 1996
Bang on a Can All-Stars - Muziekgebouw, Grote Zaal
Program Info: Chamber Orchestra: Vicky Chow, piano David Cossin, percussion Arlen Hlusko, cello Mark Stewart, guitar Ken Thomson, clarinet
The New York-based Bang on a Can All-Stars represent powerful American East Coast music. Music influenced by jazz and pop, and by iconic composers like Steve Reich, Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. But also music by "our" Louis Andriessen, whose groundbreaking work had a major impact on the New York music scene. Film takes centre stage in this tribute to Japanese film composer and synthesiser phenomenon Ryuichi Sakamoto.
"Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence," starring David Bowie, marked Sakamoto's breakthrough in 1983. Many films followed, including "The Sheltering Sky" (1990) and "The Revenant " (2015). For his legendary album "1996," Sakamoto adapted his film scores for a classical piano trio, giving new life to his captivating blend of minimalism, pop music, and Hollywood romance. This album, rearranged for the exciting crossover line-up of Bang on a Can All-Stars, can now be heard live in Europe for the first time.
"Bang on a Can All Stars is a fiercely combative band, combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble." – The New York Times
