22 May 2026 Hof (Germany)
From Berlin to Hollywood
Hofer Symphoniker conducted by Martijn Dendievel - Freiheitshalle, Festsaal
The Hof Symphony Orchestra's 9th Symphony Concert is dedicated to two composers who had careers in both Europe and the USA.
Kurt Weill is best known for his major stage successes with Bertolt Brecht, such as "The Threepenny Opera." Because he was persecuted by the Nazis as a Jew, Weill was forced to leave his homeland. In the mid-1930s, he began his second career as an extraordinarily successful Broadway composer in the USA. In the first part of the concert, the Hof Symphony Orchestra embarks on a musical journey through the life of Kurt Weill. The popular actor Ralf Hocke – a long-time member of the Hof Theater ensemble – slips into the role of the composer and recounts his triumphs as well as his difficult times. Soprano Katharina Persicke presents a multifaceted selection of impressive songs written by Kurt Weill. The versatile singer is accompanied by the Hof Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Chief Conductor Martijn Dendievel. The orchestral arrangements of the songs were specially created by Peter Lawrence, coordinated principal trumpeter of the Hof Symphony Orchestra and an experienced arranger and composer.
Like Kurt Weill, Erich Wolfgang Korngold also went into exile in the 1930s because of his Jewish upbringing. He worked as a composer for the Hollywood "dream factory" and even received two Oscars. The audience can experience his magnificent, film-score-like Symphony in F-sharp, Op. 40, after the interval.
The subsequent discussion with Ralf Hocke and Katharina Persicke, who will be giving a masterclass for singing students at the orchestra's own music school the day before, promises to be an entertaining "finale: questions asked."
program: Kurt Weill - A musical journey through the life of Kurt Weill Erich Wolfgang Korngold Symphony in F-sharp op. 40, uses themes from ELIZABETH & ESSEX and CAPTAIN BLOOD in its slow movement and a theme from KINGS ROW in the finale.
