In this "Popcorn Symphony," we perform film music from blockbusters such as "Superman," "Barbie," "Gran Torino," "The Piano," "Elevator to the Gallows," "Zorba the Alexis," and "Jaws." We transform the Frankfurt Exhibition Hall into a cinema. The rich orchestral sound replaces Dolby surround sound, transforming great film music into a special live experience.
Our audience will hear how Superman heroically saves good and defeats evil, and the sound of a piano becomes the expressive voice of a mute woman. We will musically transport you to the surreal art world of Greta Gerwing's 2023 film "Barbie." This metaphor for equality and diversity has won over 90 film awards—including the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It was written by Billie Eilish.
We're commemorating the classic film "Zorba the Apostle," in which the "sirtaki" plays a major role. A dance that became so famous that for 60 years, everyone has mistaken it for a traditional Greek folk dance. In fact, the sirtaki was invented specifically for this film. We'll also encounter another Hollywood legend at this concert. We'll be playing music from Clint Eastwood's film "Gran Torino" – a biting, at times melancholic, at times bitterly sarcastic drama about a war veteran and Ford worker, and the question of what exactly is quintessentially American. The catchy music was composed, among others, by Eastwood's son Kyle.
Film music specialist Bernd Ruf will conduct this concert. He is one of the pioneers in the fusion of symphonic, pop, rock, and jazz music. His son Ilja will be on stage with him. The pianist, singer, clarinetist, and composer has won top prizes in both classical and jazz competitions.
