Summer is approaching – so it only makes sense to set sail for Italy with a concert. The young Orestis Papaioannou will be setting anchor in the Sicilian port city of Palermo with his new composition "Quattro Canti." In this concert, we will also draw on the powerful imagery of opera and film to bring the port city to life in the concert. Giuseppe Verdi's overture to his opera "I Vespri siciliani," premiered in 1855, transports us to the culturally rich Sicily of the Middle Ages with pathos, but also with voluptuous and playful sounds. The film "The Godfather," which Nino Rota set so impressively to music in 1972 and whose music still evokes the atmosphere of smoky Mafiosi back rooms, is set in the same location.

At the end of the 19th century, Pietro Mascagni captured the entire musical breadth of the Sicilian peninsula in his one-act verismo opera "Cavalleria Rusticana," which is performed in concert. The "peasant chivalry" of "Cavalleria rusticana" depicts archaic rituals in rural Sicily. Here, Easter is still strongly rooted in the pagan tradition of the Spring Sacrifice, and a rivalry over a woman is fought out in a traditional knife fight, as in the case of the farmer Turiddu and the carter Alfio over his wife Lola, for whom Turiddu left the single Santuzza.

Orestis Papaioannou (*1993) - »Quattro Canti« (world premiere)
Giuseppe Verdi (1813 – 1901) - Overture from »I Vespri Siciliani«
Nino Rota (1911 – 1979) - Film music from »The Godfather«
Pietro Mascagni (1863 – 1945) - »Rustic Cavalry«
