Our final chamber music retreat of the season: We're looking forward to a program with an unusual line-up and a magical world of sound and rhythm. Four string players and our two percussionists will present a concert with fascinating works. This includes a brand-new piece by Gabriele Campagna – a violinist colleague in our orchestra who composes "on the side" and whose string quartet we premiered last season. We're excited to see which facets of his diverse percussion arsenal he will illuminate today. The work by composer Andy Pape, originally from the USA and now living in Denmark, is a veritable acoustic choreography – the title is a playful combination of the words "cadence" and "dance." He wrote it in 1989, and its rhythmic intricacies and sonic excesses are particularly captivating. Philip Glass's impressive Third String Quartet also offers a great deal of artistry and ingenuity—and, of course, that unmistakable hypnotic pull that often characterizes his scores. The poetic music was originally composed in 1985 as part of a film about the life of the Japanese writer and revolutionary Mishima and, through intense musical imagery, explores some childhood memories. The 2022 piece "Lucite Dreams," written by the American Max Vinetz, will also be a delight: It wittily revolves around various pieces of furniture and their materials, including IKEA's transparent "Tobias" chair—and provides a wonderful opportunity for the musicians to demonstrate the range of playing possibilities on their instruments.
