Film concert: Charlie Chaplin – The Kid
Dortmunder Philharmoniker conducted by Carlos Vázquez - Konzerthaus Dortmund
Program Info: Charles Chaplin – The Kid
For many fans and connoisseurs, Charlie Chaplin's first feature film is his most personal and best: The Kid from 1921. The autobiographically grounded tragicomedy balances between laughter and compassion in an inimitable way and captivates with sentimental elements as well as slapstick gags. Thanks to the irresistible portrayal of Chaplin and little Jackie Coogan in his debut role, realism, romance and phantasmagoria combine to create a great cinematic pleasure. Unforgettable scenes include the lesson in table manners, the brawl with the bully and the tramp's angel dream.
The title character of the film is a foundling. Charlie, in his "eternal" role as a hitchhiker, finds the abandoned infant and tries in vain to get rid of him. Five years later, the two have become heart and soul, the boy has adopted the habits of his foster father down to the smallest gestures. One stands up for the other. But the happiness does not seem to last, as the mother, who has now become a famous actress, wants to bring the child back. Although Charlie fights for Jackie by all means, he loses him to his biological mother. But in the end, everything turns out well: All three come together to form a happy family.
In 1971, 50 years after the film was made, Chaplin created the music for his masterpiece. In doing so, he returned stylistically to his youth: to the world of the English music hall. The music is less aimed at the small-scale illustration of the plot, but captures the basic mood of the respective scene with large musical arcs and unfolds a special poetic magic.
