The film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is a magnificent homage to music, time-honoured traditions and the inexhaustible power of the human spirit. “Fiddler on the Roof” is set in the village of Anatevka in Ukraine in 1905 and tells the story of Tevye (Chaim Topol), a poor milkman. He wants to find good husbands for his five daughters and at the same time tries to preserve the traditions of his religion and community in a changing world.
The Yiddish-speaking author Sholem Aleichem wrote a series of short stories beginning in 1894 under the title “Tevye, the Milkman.” Based on the 1964 musical with a score by composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick, a stage play by Joseph Stein and an original Broadway production directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Harold Prince in New York, it was created in 1971 the legendary film “Fiddler on the Roof”.
At the 1972 Academy Awards, director Norman Jewison's film was awarded three Oscars, including for the film score adapted by John Williams. “Fiddler on the Roof – The Film with Orchestra” was specially edited for live performance.
