Festival du Cinéma muet d'Anères: The Grand Duke's Finances
Antonio Coppola, piano - Festival venue
Program Info: The Grand Duke's Finances by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau with Alfred Abel, Mady Christians, Harry Liedtke 1924 / Germany / 1h17 / DCP / vostf Copy: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation (Wiesbaden / Germany)
A duchy nestled on an island, seemingly sumptuous but in debt. At its head is the Grand Duke, a gentleman as altruistic as he is distracted, threatened by his chief creditor, a scoundrel who soon hatches a conspiracy to overthrow him...
The Grand Duke's Finances marks Murnau's bold foray into political-comic-adventure cinema, offering a refreshing and witty interlude in his oeuvre. The film presents itself as a festive and slightly offbeat escapade, in which we discover from the very beginning the mischievous and impertinent spirit that animates the entire gallery of characters: revolutionaries with a slightly "nickel-footed" charm, a financially battered grand duke who behaves impeccably to protect his principles, a kind-hearted gentleman burglar, not to mention a Russian princess with a surprising look borrowed from the pop world, an old loan shark with unwelcome manners... The plot, deliberately convoluted, rich in melodramatic twists and turns, reveals its broad outlines from the start, to the point that certain passages in the second act already mark the beginnings of the finale. The story also unfolds in breathtaking natural settings across Europe, including the small island of Rab in Croatia, which provides an authentic and charming backdrop for this incredible adventure.
