The Veil of Happiness by Édouard-Émile Violet with Liao Sze Tchin, Sussie Wata, Shu-hou 1923 / France / 0h53 / DCP Copy: film restored by the CNC thanks to a copy made available by the Eye Filmmuseum with the Édouard-Émile Violet estate and the Fondation Musée Clémenceau.
A wealthy Chinese man who has become blind enjoys every possible comfort and lives happily with his wife and son. One day, he regains his sight and sees the deceitfulness of his friends, the meanness of his wife, and the ingratitude of his son...
The old Chinese legend set in the Ming era and imagined by Georges Clemenceau, finally sees the screen after having enjoyed, for many evenings, a justified success on the stage. To bring his work to a successful conclusion (which is done) Édouard-Émile Violet had scrupulously recreated the settings of Old China, and this allowed us to admire scenes of a most successful local color. An excellent Chinese troupe, a production that leaves nothing to be desired, an adaptation that at no time betrays the original text, make The Veil of Happiness predict an undeniable success, the greatest part of which will be due to Messrs. Édouard-Émile Violet and Louis Aubert who had the good initiative to mount this interesting production and to present it to us in a very skillful way with a score by Charles Pons which adds even more to the success of the film.
