If this comedy works on invention, the tinkering genius is therefore here at the very basis of the story; it is not intended as in Keaton to save the hero from a bad situation, or from an even more perilous situation. It is only at the origin of a series of crazy gags and multiplied in number which go beyond reality for the unpredictable and the absurd, naturally transgressing the idea that we have of the everyday. The gag is poetic. Gratuitous, it is never utilitarian, which explains the sometimes stifling aspect of certain Snub Pollards, dedicated to the non-sensical and seemingly truly infinite accumulation of bizarre situations engendered by a theme, or from a single starting point.
