The white hell of Piz Palü by Arnold Fanck and Georg Wilhelm Pabst with Gustav Diessl, Ernst Petersen, Leni Riefenstahl 1929 / Germany / 2h14 / DCP / vostf Copy: Tamasa Distribution
Dr. Krafft loses his wife in a mountain fall during their honeymoon. Ten years later, a young couple goes on an expedition to the same location and encounters Krafft, convinced that his wife is still alive...
We have already had many mountain dramas, but rarely surpassing in emotional power the film of Pabst and Fanck. Exceptional, indeed, are these works where untamed nature, the unleashed elements play the principal role, animating the entire film with a true breath. The White Hell of Piz Palü is one of them. [...] One can imagine what crazy audacity must have presided over the making of such a film, what difficulties the reckless artisans of the film must have overcome. Brushing with death to record a formidable avalanche of blocks of snow and stone falling on a group of mountaineers who we see knocked down, dragged, thrown into bottomless chasms. Operators and artists do not hesitate to hang above the abysses, to descend into crevasses several hundred meters deep to film inside in the light of magnesium torches playing on the thousand facets of the formidable blocks of ice.
