A samurai who returns to his clan after a three-year absence discovers that his fiancée has become his lord's mistress. But things get even more complicated when the young warrior is accused of treason...
The film's original title betrays the subgenre to which this period drama belongs: "jidai geki," a genre depicting betrayal and conspiracy within a samurai clan. In 1927, producer Teinosuke Kinugasa launched the brilliant film career of Chojiro Hayashi, a new type of jidai geki hero. In stark contrast to the genre's tough, heroic stars (until then, jidai geki had appealed to a predominantly female audience), Hayashi's character is a slim young man whose androgynous good looks rival any female star's appeal without losing any of his masculine appeal. The film is punctuated by long, lyrical intertitles, providing valuable insight into the stylistic register of the benshi who would have narrated the film, and at least five beautifully choreographed fight scenes.
