o pay the rent on her field, a young peasant woman becomes the wet nurse of a wealthy landowner's child. Raped by the owner, she becomes a woman of ill repute. Her husband, still hoping for her return, becomes a laborer...
In this realism, however, there is nothing obscene, neither in the attempted violence against the young nurse, nor in the scenes in the house of ill repute. From this house... of pleasure... there nevertheless emanates such an atmosphere of vice, of physical and moral defilement that nausea sometimes prevails over pity. Without overdoing it, the director uses, with a real sense of image, parallelism, making, for example, a milk cow succeed the young nurse, who thus takes the rank of human cattle in the minds of her employers. Elsewhere, he has also taken pleasure in establishing the decadence of the beings who frequent the sad girls of joy by presenting them to us in front of a distorting mirror. Before this mirror, the prognathism of the individuals is accentuated, it is no longer a man, but a brute shaken by a laugh of lust; it is no longer a girl, but a waste of humanity. In the midst of all these repulsive beings, a woman's figure, with candid features, pure and innocent eyes: the young Russian peasant girl.
