Masterworks from the Philip Glass Ensemble
Philip Glass Ensemble - Koningin Elisabethzaal
Program Info: With 'Masterworks' the Philip Glass Ensemble presents an inimitable, exclusive and exquisite interpretation of several compositions by the famous American minimal music composer on Monday 13 October in the Queen Elisabeth Hall, Antwerp.
The programme* includes 'Music In Similar Motion' - composed in 1969 for a small ensemble and a milestone in minimalist music due to its repetitive, slowly transforming, rhythmic patterns -, 'Parts 7 & 8' from the monumental 'Music In 12 Parts' composed between 1971 and 1974 and 'Dance 9', the closing composition for the dance performance 'In The Upper Room' from 1986, which encompasses the energy and intensity of the eight preceding suites. Also a selection from 'The Civil Wars: A Tree is Best Measured When It is Down', an opera from the early eighties directed by Robert Wilson with music by Glass, David Byrne and Gavin Bryers, the dynamic 'Grid' from the film 'Koyaanisqatsi' (1982) and 'Mosque/Temple' or an 'Anthem' section from the film 'Powaqqatsi' (1988). We will certainly be looking forward to 'Dance 1' from the five-part cycle 'Dance' (1979), a groundbreaking collaboration between Glass, choreographer Lucinda Childs and artist Sol LeWitt at the time.
