29 August 2025 Bergen (Norway)
From Rome to Hollywood and beyond!
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ben Glassberg - Nygårdsparken
Program Info: Film music has defined a new and popular genre within classical music in the twentieth century.
A number of the greatest film composers come from or have their roots in Italy. Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota reign supreme, but Michael Giacchino and Alan Silvestri also score highly. Ennio Morricone, with over four hundred compositions for film and television, is one of the greatest film composers of all time.
Many know his music for Sergio Leone's spaghetti western films, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with Clint Eastwood. The film's award-winning soundtrack is one of the most famous in film history.
Nino Rota collaborated with the great film directors Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. His music for The Godfather is legendary.
Michael Giacchino has written music for blockbusters such as Mission Impossible, Jurassic World and the Marvel universe.
Alan Silvestri has composed the soundtrack for the Avengers films as well as a number of other major films, such as Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks.
Ottorino Respighi was the leading Italian composer of the first half of the twentieth century. Today he is perhaps best known for his magnificent and colorful works, including The Pines of Rome from 1924. In the work, Respighi evokes the atmosphere, colors and sounds of Rome, from children playing and making noise, via the underground catacombs to the pine trees along the ancient Roman road, the Via Appia.
