Powaqqatsi
Philip Glass Ensemble - TivoliVredenburg
Program Info: Philip Glass - Powaqqatsi
Whoever says Koyaanisqatsi , immediately says Philip Glass. The legendary status of the film is mainly linked to his name and less to that of director Godfrey Reggio. The film music was performed with great success in the Grote Zaal in 2023. Powaqqatsi , part two of the 'Quatsi trilogy', is just as intoxicating as part one. The one and only Philip Glass Ensemble will play live at the film screening.
Enchanting soundtrack After the success of Koyaanisqatsi in 1982, Philip Glass and Godfrey Reggio followed up in 1988 with Powaqqatsi – Life in Transition . The title is a Hopi neologism for a "parasitic way of life." Reggio juxtaposes images of traditional Third World cultures with those of the industrialised West. Glass's haunting soundtrack puts the collage-like narrative into perspective.
Philip Glass Ensemble With his own ensemble, Philip Glass was assured of the right approach to his then fairly experimental minimal music. He and his ensemble achieved world fame after the premiere of the opera Einstein on the Beach in 1972. Since then, the ensemble has expanded, but the heart of amplified woodwinds and keyboards has remained. Just like conductor Michael Riesman.
