Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1996
Helena Basilova, Jeffrey Bruinsma & Geneviève Verhage - Concertgebouw, Kleine Zaal
Program Info: Jeffrey Bruinsma, violin Geneviève Verhage, cello Helena Basilova, piano
Pianist Helena Basilova, violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma and cellist Geneviève Verhage pay tribute to the iconic album 1996 (including Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence ) by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. A composer who explored the boundaries between classical, jazz, film music and electronic music. 1996
In April 2024, pianist Helena Basilova released a beautiful album as a personal tribute to the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Now there is a sequel: together with violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma and cellist Geneviève Verhage, Basilova plays their own arrangements of Sakamoto's legendary piano trio album 1996 , which includes classics such as Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence and Bibo No Aozora . The album 1996 was the result of a world tour that Sakamoto made that year with colleagues Jaques Morelenbaum and Everton Nelson. A tour in which the three musicians always played far apart, evenly distributed across the stage. In the dark with only three spotlights on the musicians. Basilova, Bruinsma and Verhage now bring this musical world of Sakamoto, in which jazz, film, classical and experimental influences merge, back to life. Ryuichi Sakamoto
Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) was a composer, musician and producer. He broke down the boundaries between different music genres, ranging from classical, jazz and film to 80's synthpop and experimental electronic music. He was influenced by composers ranging from Bach to Debussy, from John Cage to Boulez and Ligeti. 'An impressionist of the modern age', he has been called.
