International Brucknerfest 25: Buster Keatons The General
Matan Porat, piano - Verborgener FestSpielOrt
Program Info: Buster Keaton // 1895–1966 - The General // USA 1926 Silent film with live improvised accompaniment
For patriotic Southerner Johnnie Gray – played by Buster Keaton – only two things in life are truly important: his locomotive named 'The General' and his lover Annabelle Lee... in that order! When the American Civil War breaks out, Johnnie is not allowed to join the army because he is needed as a train driver. Annabelle then wants nothing more to do with him. But when she and the locomotive are kidnapped by Union troops, everything suddenly changes: Johnnie gets deeper and deeper into 'enemy territory' to retrieve his locomotive and his beloved. Based on William Pittenger's book The Great Locomotive Chase, which is now almost 100 years old, achieved Buster Keaton's 1926 silent film comedy The General, a stroke of genius combining ambitious dramaturgy, striking imagery and slapstick humour. The music for the film is improvised by the Israeli pianist and composer Matan Porat, a proven expert in the accompaniment of silent films.
