Lotte Reiniger // 1899–1981 - The Adventures of Prince Achmed // D 1926 Silhouette film with original music by Wolfgang Zeller // 1893–1967
The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a pioneering piece in film history: It is the first surviving feature-length animated film, conceived by the German silhouette artist and filmmaker Lotte Reiniger. The feature-length film premiered on May 2, 1926, at the Berlin Volksbühne, making it almost 100 years old. It interweaves various motifs from the Arabian Nights collection of stories into a captivating plot – flying magic horses, mysterious islands, dwarves, witches, and magic lamps are all part of it.
The silent film will be accompanied by the renowned Swiss piano quintet I Salonisti, which gained worldwide acclaim through its participation in another milestone in film history: In the blockbuster Titanic , the ensemble's musicians played the orchestra on board the ship. This evening, they will perform Wolfgang Zeller's original film score in an arrangement for piano quintet, just as they did at the premiere of Lotte Reiniger's film in 1926.
