International Brucknerfest 25: Concerto macabre
Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Markus Poschner - Brucknerhaus, Großer Saal

Program Info:
Bruckner Orchester Linz
Markus Poschner, conductor
Giuseppe Albanese, piano

The boundaries between cinema and concert are fluid. At least in the works of this program, for which Italian pianist Giuseppe Albanese returns to the Brucknerhaus Linz to blend two one-movement piano concertos into a single piece with Markus Poschner and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. For the Spellbound Concerto , Miklós Rózsa used his Oscar-winning music for the film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock, who had initially asked Bernard Herrmann to perform. However, Herrmann was already working on his Concerto macabre , the performance of which forms the dramatic final scene of the film *Hangover Square* , also released in 1945 .

In contrast, there's Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F-sharp, with which the composer, who had become a Hollywood star after emigrating to the USA, sought to prove himself again in the concert hall. Like Korngold himself, the piece oscillates between Los Angeles and Vienna, effective film music and complex symphonic music, thus constituting, in the words of conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos, "the perfect work of modernity."

Bernard Herrmann 1911–1975 - Suite from the Film Vertigo // 1958
Miklós Rózsa 1907–1995 - Spellbound Concerto for Piano and Orchestra // 1945
Bernard Herrmann - Concerto macabre for piano and orchestra // 1944, 1973

// Pause //

Erich Wolfgang Korngold 1897–1957 - Symphony in F sharp minor, op. 40 // 1949–52, uses themes from ELIZABETH & ESSEX and CAPTAIN BLOOD in its slow movement and a theme from KINGS ROW in the finale.
