Works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Péter Eötvös, and John Williams in one concert? The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mei-Ann Chen, demonstrates how ear- and eye-opening this combination is. True to the motto "Action!", the first half features two concertos for saxophone and orchestra, played by rising star Asya Fateyeva: Eötvös's 2021 work "Focus," for which the composer drew inspiration from film camera technology to create a musical "sound camera," enters into dialogue with Williams' " Escapades ," a concert version of his score for Steven Spielberg's " Catch Me If You Can ."
The second half is entirely dedicated to John Williams, with a selection from his film scores ranging from Indiana Jones to Jaws and Schindler's List to Star Wars , and at the same time draws a connection to the beginning of the concert, where the suite from the 1942 film Kings Row makes audible how great the influence of Korngold on Williams and other film composers still is today.
