Peninsula Music Festival: A Night at the Movies: Heroes
The Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra conducted by Rune Bergmann - Door Community Auditorium
Program Info: Get ready for a thrilling cinematic adventure as the Peninsula Music Festival presents A Night at the Movies – Heroes, a spectacular tribute to the music that has defined some of the greatest heroes in film history. Under the baton of Maestro Rune Bergmann and featuring rising stars from Yale’s prestigious conducting program, this exhilarating evening brings together sweeping drama, heart-pounding action, and unforgettable melodies, showing us the powerful connection between music and storytelling on the silver screen.
The night begins with the instantly recognizable Raiders March from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, John Williams’ iconic theme that perfectly captures the adventure and daring of cinema’s most beloved archaeologist-hero. This rousing opener sets the stage for an evening filled with adventure, triumph, and emotion.
The program then takes a heartfelt turn with “Smile”, the timeless melody composed by Charlie Chaplin and later arranged by David Raskin. A tender and bittersweet tribute to resilience, this piece reminds us of the power of music to inspire hope and perseverance.
A special highlight of the program features emerging composer Jeremy Chase’s “Caribou” from the acclaimed documentary series Our Planet. This stirring composition stands as “a testament to life’s magnificent perseverance amidst the toughest conditions,” creating a musical portrait of the majestic creatures of the Arctic and celebrating “the striking beauty and power of our planet.”
Returning to the legendary John Williams, the program features several of his most celebrated works, each capturing the essence of heroism in its many forms:
“Viktor’s Tale” from The Terminal – A playful and deeply expressive clarinet solo evokes the bittersweet journey of a man caught between worlds. “With Malice Toward None” from Lincoln – A noble and contemplative piece that embodies President Abraham Lincoln’s wisdom and compassion. Theme from Schindler’s List – Performed by Concertmaster Dennis Kim, this profoundly moving violin solo intertwines sorrow and hope, standing as one of the most emotionally stirring themes ever written. Theme from Jaws – The unmistakable, tension-building motif that has kept audiences on the edge of their seats for decades. Then, buckle up for the grand finale—John Williams’ Suite from Star Wars will transport you to a galaxy far, far away, bringing the magic of the Force, the Millennium Falcon, and epic space battles to life in an electrifying orchestral performance. Feel the thrill of soaring through the stars with Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca—and Rune!
This roller-coaster evening has something for everyone, from tender moments of reflection to pulse-pounding adventure and everything in between. The participation of Yale conducting students alongside Maestro Bergmann adds an exciting dimension to the program, showcasing the next generation of musical talent interpreting these beloved scores.
Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for an unforgettable night of cinematic musical magic! With thrilling surprises in store and music that has captivated audiences across generations, this concert promises to be one of the season’s most entertaining and unmissable events.
