Karl Bartos - Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
Kraftwerk legend Karl Bartos brings a masterpiece of film history into the present. With his innovative new soundtrack of the expressionist silent film classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," presented on the big screen, he creates a unique sound world that blurs the boundaries between past and future. The impressive fusion of electronic music and timeless imagery makes for a fascinating live experience – a cinematic and musical triumph that has thrilled audiences and critics alike.
Kraftwerk legend Karl Bartos has re-scored "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung with the headline "Pop Culture's Big Bang." Robert Wiene's 1920 silent film classic is considered an expressionist masterpiece and, incidentally, the first psychological thriller ever. For it, electronic pioneer Bartos crafted a new, experimentally interpreted soundscape, inventing a code that translates the cinematic masterpiece into the here and now.
Bartos' film score transforms the centuries-spanning sound of a symphony orchestra into electronics, including a sound architecture that, with barely perceptible sounds, noises, and murmurs, abolishes the separation between image and sound that was inherent in the era.
Now Karl Bartos is bringing “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” with his film music live to the concert hall in the 4K version restored by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation in 2014.
