Koyaanisqatsi in concert
The Philip Glass Ensemble (PGE) - Le Forum

Program Info:
Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi

The Philip Glass Ensemble (PGE) brings together the leading interpreters of the music of Philip Glass. Founded in 1968 in New York City by Philip Glass, the PGE originally served as a laboratory for his music. Its goal was to develop a performance practice capable of meeting the unprecedented technical and artistic demands of his compositions. By pioneering this approach, the PGE became a vital source of creativity for Glass, and its members remain unparalleled interpreters of his work today.
The artists of the PGE are aware of their unique place in the musical history of the last fifty years, and the transmission of this legacy is an integral part of their mission. They are deeply committed to training the next generation of artists in the authentic practice of Philip Glass's music.
The PGE debuted in 1969 at the Whitney Museum of American Art and, in its early years, performed primarily in the galleries, artists' lofts, and museums of SoHo's thriving art scene. Over the next five decades, the PGE performed at major festivals and concert halls across five continents and recorded with Sony, Nonesuch, and Orange Mountain Music.
Many of Philip Glass's most famous works were specially composed for the PGE, including:
His signature works: Music in Twelve Parts, Music in Similar Motion, Music with Changing Parts. His operas and musical theatre projects: Einstein on the Beach, Hydrogen Jukebox, 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, Monsters of Grace. His choreographic works: Dance (Lucinda Childs) and A Descent Into the Maelström (Australian Dance Theater). The PGE is best known for its soundtracks to Godfrey Reggio's three experimental films: Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi. His musical imprint can also be found in the operas Beauty and the Beast and The Photographer by Glass.
In May 2024, the PGE performed Music in Twelve Parts on the same New York stage where the work had premiered 50 years earlier.
